After receiving requests from Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones (R-San Diego), Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed six bad bills sent to him by California Democrat legislators.
“I urged the governor to veto several bad bills passed by the Legislature this year and I thank him for listening to my requests,” said Leader Jones. “I’m always glad to see bipartisan leadership on important issues.”
Below is a list of bills the governor vetoed after receiving requests from Leader Jones:
SB 58 (Wiener) – A dangerous measure that would have decriminalized the personal use of specified hallucinogens (psychedelic drugs) starting in January 2025.

SB 81 (Skinner) – A dangerous measure that would have forced courts to override the parole board and governor, and release criminals—even violent ones—early from prison.

SB 403 (Wahab) – An unnecessary, divisive, and discriminatory measure that would not only have targeted and racially profiled South Asian Californians, but also would have put other California residents and businesses at risk.

AB 1604 (Bonta) – An unfair measure that would have hurt charter schools and the students they serve by imposing harsh restrictions on charter school facility funding.
SB 541 (Menjivar) – An absurd measure that would have required junior high and high schools to make condoms available to all students, including children as young as 12.
SB 596 (Portantino) – A measure that attempted to silence concerned parents who speak out at school board meetings with a new and undefined crime: causing "substantial disorder" at a school board meeting.
