Senate Minority Leader Brian Jones condemns Lame Duck Governor Newsom's gas price hike

Today, Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones (R-San Diego) unequivocally denounced the political gamesmanship and ill-conceived policy advanced by Lame Duck Governor Gavin Newsom and Progressive Democrat lawmakers during the second extraordinary session, which concluded today with the governor signing Assembly Bill 2x-1 into law.

“Lame Duck Governor Newsom and progressive Democrat lawmakers are working overtime to increase costs at the pump and make gasoline so expensive that Californians are forced into an electric car,” said Leader Jones. “AB2x-1 was needlessly rushed through the Legislature right before an election and barely passed in both houses without the standard checks and balances built into the regular session. Importantly, the bill faced bipartisan opposition as a few brave Democrats stood up to King Newsom’s publicity charade and voted to protect Californians’ wallets.

"AB2x-1 aims to withhold gasoline supply from the market. It’s simple economics—when supply goes down, prices go up. This costly measure will be known as ‘Progressive California Democrats' planned gasoline shortage disaster.’

“While Californians are distracted by Newsom's latest media stunt, his Air Resources Board is quietly pushing through a measure that will RAISE gas prices by 65 cents per gallon. Even more convenient, this vote will happen after the November election. Make no mistake, Newsom's administration is getting rich off Californians at the pump," concluded Leader Jones.

AB2x-1 will take effect on January 13, 2025.
