El Cajon – Senator Brian Jones (R-Santee) today referenced recent media reports of Californians having their voter registration wrongly changed by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) in calling for passage of Senate Bill 57 by Senator Pat Bates (R-Laguna Niguel) and coauthored by Senator Jones.
“In what is a clear example of mission creep, the DMV has over the last few years been required by the supermajority Democrat-controlled Legislature, Secretary of State and Governor’s office, to register to vote all customers seeking DMV services. This mandated focus on voter registration has caused wait times at DMV to skyrocket, the DMV’s budget to balloon unnecessarily, invited tampering with voter records, and caused the DMV’s mission of issuing Driver’s Licenses and registering vehicles to be neglected,” stated Senator Jones. “Forced and tampered voter registrations at the DMV need to end now!”
SB 57 simply changes state law so that instead of DMV having to automatically register motorists to only registering those motorists that actually ask to be registered to vote. The hearing on SB 57 by the Senate Elections & Constitution Amendments Committee is set for Tuesday, January 7, 2020 at 9:30am in Room 112 of the State Capitol.
The Senate Elections & Constitutional Amendments Committee members are Chair Tom Umberg (D-Santa Ana); Vice-Chair Jim Nielsen (R-Tehama); Bob Hertzberg (D-Los Angeles); Connie Leyva (D-Chino); and Henry Stern (D-Canoga Park).
