Bipartisan senators applaud federal effort to expand treatment through medical breakthroughs

Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones (R-San Diego), Senator Josh Becker (D-Menlo Park) and Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) have issued the following joint statement on Presidential Executive Order No. 14401, “Accelerating Medical Treatments for Serious Mental Illness:”

“The President’s recent Executive Order on psychedelic medicine is an important step toward expanding research, accelerating responsible treatment pathways, and improving care for veterans, first responders, and others living with serious mental health conditions.

Californians across the political spectrum understand the urgency of the mental health crisis and the need for better options grounded in science, safety, and accountability.

This federal action creates an opportunity to move beyond rhetoric and make real progress for patients and families who have waited too long.

California should meet this moment with seriousness and urgency. Our state is home to world-class researchers, health systems, and public leaders who can help build the infrastructure needed to safely and effectively deliver emerging treatments. That means investing in system readiness now: clinical research, provider training, implementation planning, data collection, and coordination across agencies and institutions.

As these therapies continue to advance, California should be prepared not just to respond, but to lead.”
