Today, Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones (R-San Diego) announced that applications are now open for the 2026-27 California Senate Fellows Program, the state’s most respected public service fellowships for aspiring leaders. Interested graduates of all partisan affiliations are encouraged to apply by the December 8 deadline.
The program offers recent college graduates and young professionals the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the legislative process as well as advanced academic training through the Senate’s partnership with Sacramento State University. It is widely considered among the most prestigious public policy fellowships in the nation and alumni are highly recruited to positions in all branches of government and across the private sector.
“The Senate Fellows Program gives young Californians a front row seat to how the sausage is made in Sacramento and how state government impacts our daily lives both for the better, and for the worse,” said Jones. “It’s a chance to make a real difference and an opportunity to get unparalleled access, mentorship and experience in public policymaking.”
Applications are open until December 8 at 11:59 pm and the 11-month program begins in October 2026. Participants receive a monthly salary, health, vision and dental benefits and graduate-level coursework in government and public policy at Sacramento State University.
Jones especially encouraged applicants from San Diego County and surrounding areas to consider applying, noting the region’s unique needs and long history of producing strong leaders in state government.
“Anyone who cares about California’s future and holds a desire to serve should absolutely apply,” said Jones. “This experience shapes principled, informed leaders who can help fix California and make government work better for everyone. The experience gained is invaluable for those who are accepted.”
