Senate Minority Leader Jones Honors Fallen San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar

This evening, Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones (R-San Diego) issued the following statement regarding the death of San Diego Police Department Officer Austin Machitar and the critical injury of his partner Officer Zachary Martinez:

“San Diego mourns the loss of a true hero, Officer Austin Machitar, who, at just 30 years old, gave his life to protect our community,” said Leader Jones. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, loved ones, and colleagues at the San Diego Police Department. As we honor his memory, we also pray for the swift recovery of his partner, Zachary Martinez, who remains in critical condition following the accident. Our police officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, and we are forever grateful for their courage and sacrifice."

On August 26, 2024, Officer Machitar and Officer Martinez were responding to a vehicle pursuit in Clairemont when the suspect vehicle collided with the side of the patrol car with the two officers inside. Officer Machitar succumbed to his injuries, and Officer Martinez is in critical condition.

Officer Machitar, 30, was a San Diego native and joined the San Diego Police Department five-and-a-half years ago. He is survived by his parents and sister.

In honor of Officer Machitar, the governor has ordered flags at the State Capitol and Capitol Annex Swing Space to be flown at half-staff.
