Today, Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones (R-San Diego) announced the unanimous passage of SB 1150 by the California State Senate. The bill requires hospitals and treatment facilities providing cancer care to post a clear notice informing patients that cancer diagnoses must be reported to the California Department of Public Health and that their personal health data will be included in the California Cancer Registry.
“As a cancer survivor myself, I understand how overwhelming a diagnosis can be,” said Jones. “Patients should not later discover their medical information was shared with the government without their knowledge. This bill was shot down in four previous efforts but I’ve kept fighting for patients who deserve transparency and respect during one of the hardest moments of their lives. I’ll keep fighting this battle until I get it across the finish line and signed into law.”
The bill passed unanimously with bipartisan support. Jones was joined in his effort by Senator Akilah Weber Pierson (D-San Diego), chair of the Senate Health Committee and a practicing physician who herself reports cases in her practice.
Jones said the bill’s passage reflects a commitment to improving patient communication, strengthening transparency, and finally fixing a problem that has gone unaddressed for years.
